How to fix the STOP: 0x000000D1 or Stop 0xD1 or DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error

Stop errors (blue screen) in Windows

Stop errors (also called blue screen errors or blue screen of death errors) are the most severe errors Windows can encounter. They occur if a serious problem causes your Windows system to shut down or restart unexpectedly. You might see a message that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer".

These errors can be caused by both hardware and software issues, and it can be difficult to troubleshoot the problem. In reality, the most common cause of blue screen errors is a device driver problem. Outdated, incorrect or corrupt drivers can cause the system to encounter a Stop error. You can use a driver update program to check, find, download and update all device drivers automatically.

The following tools and methods can also help you get Windows up and running again.

The DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL bug check has a value of 0x000000D1. This indicates that a kernel-mode driver attempted to access pageable memory at a process IRQL that was too high.

What is a driver?
A driver on your operating system is a file that controls a particular piece of hardware on the machine. Each system device is given an IRQL number, allowing the processor to know which device issued a particular order. Drivers that have used improper addresses typically cause the not less or equal IRQL error.

The following suggestions can help you resolve the DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL error:

This Stop error can occur after you install faulty drivers or system services. If a driver file name is given, you need to disable, remove, or roll back that driver. If not, disable the recently installed service or application to determine whether this resolves the error. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the hardware manufacturer for updates. Using updated drivers and software is especially important for backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, DVD playback, and CD mastering tools.

In most cases the DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL error can be solved by updating the drivers for the device causing the error. Also make sure you update your Windows and antivirus software, as some of these errors are not caused by hardware, but software problems. You can use the Windows device manager to uninstall any currently installed driver for the device and reinstall the latest driver. When you reboot your PC after uninstalling the drivers, Windows will detect the new hardware, which allows you to install manually the latest drivers for the device.

If you do not have the drivers for the device in error, or are not comfortable in using the Windows device manager, you can also use a driver update program to find, download and update all device drivers for you. Driver update software will accurately identify your hardware, including the device in error, and automatically install the latest drivers for it. This can solve easily DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL errors.
